Waterfall on my climb up Divide Mountain.

Starting mile 302.1

It was another cold morning, around 40⁰. I decided to sleep in this morning so that it could warm up a little bit. I hit the trail about 8:45 am and had about six miles to the next shelter. The trail was nice and easy. The uphill’s weren’t bad and most of the way was downhill. I made good time and got to the shelter in time for lunch.

After lunch it was more downhill. I had to check my phone to make sure I was still on the trail because I’ve not had a section this long that was so easy. I was able to cruise through some miles. After yesterday I really enjoyed myself. We had perfect hiking weather with temperatures in the upper 50⁰s.

Then the uphill started. I’m not sure who designed this section of trail, but we had ten miles of gentle terrain and then five miles of uphill. In the last five miles we did almost 2,300 of our 3,300 feet of elevation gain. It was a long slow climb up to the top, then it was rolling ups and downs. What made it worse was that for all the climbing we never really got a view.

Overall, it was an easy day. I’ll probably push for a 20-mile day tomorrow so that I can have an easy six mile day into Erwin Tennessee. I did 15.5 miles with about 3,300 feet of elevation gain.

Ending mile 317.6
